Living Green: The Hillside House
by Lauren Ballas – LEED AP
LUXURY MEET SUSTAINABILITY: The new LEED-H Platinum certified custom home in Marin County, California. The house was designed by Scott Lee of SB Architects, owner and architect! He proves that you can achieve “high design and high sustainability” in the quality of a home. The home was constructed by McDonald Construction & Development who are known for their green building.
Get ready to take a trip to a whole new world…a home so natural and luxurious you can’t help but gasp at its exquisiteness!
This four-story, 2,116 sq. ft. home features reclaimed Douglas fir roof, ceiling beams and reclaimed western red cedar exterior framing. Just amazing, nature embraces the home as it blends in with its surroundings!
The house is designed to meet the challenges of a vertical floor-plan. The guest bedrooms and laundry room are on level one and the garage is on the ground floor.
The top floor includes the living room, dining room, kitchen and my favorite an outdoor family room. The master bedroom, yoga deck and soy lawn are on level two. Design so delicious you eat it up!
They even added customized eco-friendly hard-wood flooring and sustainable FSC-certified walnut cabinetry. I think we would all love to have radiant floor heating, LED lighting and recycled concrete for countertops.
As the first LEED-Platinum home in Northern California, it not only meets but exceeds the 100 points allotted from the green building requirements for the home. I am in love with the dining room table manufactured with lumber from a salvaged tree. Simple concept…complex color and texture!

Definitely a gorgeous green home! Thanks for sharing it and inspiring us all with the possibilities- I love to let people know that they don’t have to sacrifice style and luxury to be eco-friendly.
We thought it was gorgeous as well. We’ve been on the look out for projects that showcase Eco-friendly choices in a variety of styles, while there is a lot of good practicality behind green choices, it can be fun and beautiful as well!
